10 Reasons to Try Artistic Swimming

Jul. 07, 2021

1. Going upside down

We have lots of experience working with children to get them comfortable going upside in the water. Some of our tricks include using the wall and floaties in the hands

2. Music

There is music that plays above and below the water. Children get to make up a routine to age-appropriate music and show case all the skills they learn. Who doesn’t love music?

3. Balancing

We are experts at balancing. Artistic swimmers can balance upside down and horizontally in the water.

4. Propulsion

We teach more ways to move through the water than traditional swim strokes. We have lots of arm sculling techniques to move forward and backwards. There are even some hybrid swim skills that involve a whip kick but with a fancy arm stroke not found in swimming lessons.

5. Eggbeater

This is one of the main skills in our sport. Eggbeater can be difficult to learn because of the coordination of the timing of the legs. With the use of different equipment and laying on the water we can help everyone out. Over time the swimmers become more efficient and can eggbeater for long periods of time. Our older swimmers can eggbeater for hours if needed.

6. Learn to swim as part of a team

Swimming and learning with a team is more enjoyable. Over the season you have a chance to build relationships while training alongside 3 to 9 other swimmers.

7. There is a land component to increase general flexibility

Sometimes the issues kids face is due to a lack of mobility and flexibility. All our programs offer a land component to help our swimmers improve their current flexibility through a safe and proven training program that many of our coaches have been trained in. For more information on the training program, go to https://www.alixaflexibility.com.

8. Effortless

If you have ever watched artistic swimming, you have noticed that it looks easy. You swimmer over time will also look like swimming is easy. Some of it is learning how to balance and float. Other times it is about the sculling they have learned to support themselves with ease.

9. Supplements Other water activities

Even if artistic swimming isn’t your main sport, the advanced skills listed above will help your swimmer improve in their other water sports. Eggbeater is useful in water polo. Sculling techniques help competitive swimmers. Any sport that is under water like under water hockey will benefit from the breath work training we do.

10. It’s FUN!

Most importantly it’s fun. You get to be in the water with new friends, flipping around in the water, get to be under water lots and use music.
